5 Custom Adventure Bikes Built By “Real People”

These impressive bike builds will inspire you to start your next project.

Published on 02.12.2014

5. KTM 690 Enduro Adventure

One of the most capable off-road Adventure Bikes ever produced was the KTM 640 Adventure. Unfortunately, the bike went out of production in 2008 when KTM began producing the 690 Enduro. The 690 Enduro is a formidable off-road bike offering a 62 hp fuel-injected motor and race ready suspension. Unfortunately, the 690 Enduro isn’t setup for true long-distance Adventure Travel. Everyone was expecting KTM to produce an “Adventure” version of the bike, but seven years later we are still waiting for this model to appear.

Some are not content with waiting and have built their own KTM 690 Adventure. One of these builders is the same guy that built the previously mentioned Yamaha WR250X Girlfriend Bike. If he created that bike for his girlfriend, you can imagine he built something pretty special for himself. The bike he built is a KTM 690 Enduro that has been converted into a true Adventure Touring Bike. We think this might be the perfect balance between off-road and pavement riding. An Adventure Bike that can power through any terrain, but still ride comfortably on large stretches of highway.

Some of the modifications include a comfort seat, tall windscreen, HID lighting kit, Touratech panniers and a Scotts Steering damper. Fuel capacity was increased from 3.2 gallons (12 L) to 6.9 gallons (26 L) with a Safari tank. (photo courtesy Smugmug/mtntrails)

I did something similar with my Husky TE630–Safari Tank, hard bags, small windshield, rack, guards–some say I took a perfectly good dirt bike and turned it into a KLR…..Tom in Salem

The SV650 is a nice custom but about as unsuited for adventure riding as a Goldwing. It would be a short race to see if the oil cooler or the radiator got destroyed first. Luckily the lack of luggage capability would not leave you far to push it home.

Or the exhaust…
Suzuki made the V-strom for this purpose, so modding an SV650 into an adventure bike is a waste of time, effort, and money. Kudos to that guy for the fabrication skills though.

KLR is a great ADV bike. Who needs to reach 100mph with a fully loaded bike on unknown far flung roads with limited medical support?

Suzuki DR650 is the best platform to start with. You can build a really cool bike that is bullet-proof and nearly 100 lbs lighter then the FS800 or similar bikes. Capable of going anywhere a motorcycle can travel, narrower, very dirt capable with upgraded suspension, tons of after-market parts available. Much more maneuverable then an Africa Twin, GS or even KTM due to the lighter weight and smaller profile.
